چکیده

Informed by insights from quantum chaos theory, three approaches for estimating finite-Larmor-radius (FLR) stabilization of ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities are discussed: phase space criteria based on the Weyl formula, “pseudo-FLR” modifications of MHD to suppress large perpendicular wavenumbers, and inclusion of drift corrections to the dispersion relation. Anderson localization of ballooning modes, quantum chaos and the stability of compact quasiaxially symmetric stellarators

The radially local magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) ballooning stability of a compact, quasiaxially symmetric stellarator (QAS), is examined just above the ballooning beta limit with a method that can lead to estimates of global stability. Here MHD stability is analysed through the calculation and examination of the ballooning mode eigenvalue isosurfaces in the 3-space (s, α, θ k); s is the edge norma...

Particle Canonical Variables and Guiding center Hamiltonian up to second order in the Larmor radius

A generating function, expressed as a power series in the particle Larmor radius, is used to relate an arbitrary set of magnetic field line coordinates to particle canonical variables. A systematic procedure is described for successively choosing the generating function at each order in the Larmor radius so that the transformed particle Hamiltonian is independent of the Larmor phase angle. The ...

Finite Larmor Radius Effects in Two-Dimensional Electrostatic Plasma Turbulence

Low frequency electrostatic turbulence in strongly magnetized, low @-plasmas, is studied in two spatial dimensions. In this limit the guiding center velocity in the direction perpendicular to a homogeneous magnetic field is approximated by the E x Bo/B,2-velocity. The electron Larmor radius can safely be set to zero for most relevant conditions, but the ion-dynamics are noticeably influenced by...

Rayleigh-Taylor Instability of a Compressible Plasma with Finite Larmor Radius Effects

The Rayleigh-Taylor instability of a compressible plasma in the presence of a horizontal magnetic field is investigated, taking into account the effects of finite Larmor radius. Only transverse perturbations are considered. The problem is shown to be characterized by a variational principle. Using it, the dispersion relation is obtained for a plasma layer of finite thickness and having an expon...

Finite Larmor Radius Effects on the Magnetorotational Instability

The linear dispersion relation for the magnetorotational instability (MRI) is derived including finite Larmor radius (FLR) effects. In particular, the Braginskii form of the ion gyroviscosity, which represents the first-order FLR corrections to the two-fluid equations, is retained. It is shown that FLR effects are the most important effects in the limit of weak magnetic fields, and are much mor...
